Mary, the New Eve The role of Mary in Christ’s work of salvation takes us back to the story of the fall of Adam and Eve at the beginning of creation. In a very important passage in Scripture called the Protoevangelium (the first gospel), God announces the coming of the Messiah, the battle that will take place between the Woman and the.   Among the various characterizations of Mary, I find myself repeatedly drawn to Mary as the Second Eve in parallel to St. Paul’s reference to Christ as the Second Adam (Rom , 15; I Cor , 47). The second-century Greek bishop Irenaeus is one of the first known to make this parallel connection between Christ and Mary and Adam and Eve.

The Church fathers loved to delve into Holy Scripture and find deep meanings and parallels; or types and shadows. One of the titles they gave to the Blessed Virgin Mary was New Eve or Second Eve. The Blessed Virgin Mary is uniquely associated with Catholicism, and the century preceding the Second Vatican Council was arguably the most fertile era for Catholic Marian studies. In , Pope John Paul VI published the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, or Lumen Gentium, the eighth chapter of which presents the most comprehensive Cited by: 3.

From the declaration of Mary’s Immaculate Conception in Ineffabilis Deus by Pius IX in , through Pius XII’s Apostolic Constitution in , Munificentissimus Deus, which defined Mary’s bodily assumption into heaven as dogma, and up to the opening of the Second Vatican Council in , the study of the Virgin Mary’s role in theology flourished in a “golden age” of Mariology. Christ assumed actual flesh, conceived and born of the Virgin. 1. Those, therefore, who allege that He took nothing from the Virgin do greatly err, [since,] in order that they may cast away the inheritance of the flesh, they also reject the analogy [between Him and Adam].For if the one [who sprang] from the earth had indeed formation and substance from both the hand and workmanship of God, but.

Standing to Reason Newman clearly and concisely describes the logical progression of the thought of the Church from the earliest fathers' recognition of Mary as the second Eve.

Protestants should stop protesting long enough to listen/5. Proves that today's Marian doctrine is firmly rooted in the early Church's teachings and refutes the Protestant claim that Catholics invented devotion to Mary.

Fresh, beautiful insights. Our approach is to present the doctrine of the “Second Eve” in the thoughts of the Fathers of the Church, whose testimony to the Eve-Mary parallel shows that these ancient defenders of the Christian religion were generous in their love of Our Lady (like Catholics) and not “Marian minimizers.” The Annunciation.

Regardless of one's theological perspective on Mary and her place in the Christian life, this is must reading for anyone interested in doctrinal development throughout Christian history. His chapter on the "second Eve" is clear, concise, yet thorough and accessible to both those who are lay people and s: Jesus, the Second Adam, triumphed over the same temptations to which the first Adam fell into sin [compare Genesis to Luke ].

Just as there is a Second Adam there is also a Second Eve. Mary, the Virgin Mother of Christ is the Second Eve. As Eve cooperated with Adam, the covenant head of humanity, so Mary cooperated with Jesus Christ, the covenant head of the new humanity. Thus Irenaeus says that Eve “by disobeying became the cause of death for herself and the whole human race, so also Mary was obedient and became the cause of salvation for herself and the whole human.

This excerpt from St. Irenaeus’ classic second century work Against Heresies (Lib. 5, 19, 1; 20, 2; 21,1: SC) ponders the Blessed Virgin Mary as a new Eve. It is used in the Roman Office of Readings for Friday in the Second Week of Advent. I read Mary The Second Eve because it was on my list from the book "How to read your way to Heaven".

Mary was a first-century Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph, and the mother of Jesus, according to the canonical gospels and the Quran.

The gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament and the Quran describe Mary as a virgin. In Matthew and Luke she is betrothed to Joseph. According to Christian theology she conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit while still a virgin.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, venerated in the Christian church and a subject in Western art, music, and literature. Mary has been ascribed several titles, including guarantee of the Incarnation, virgin mother, second Eve, mother of God, ever virgin, immaculate, and assumed into heaven.

In short, Mary recapitulated Eve by not sinning when given a prerogative by God (unlike Eve, who disobeyed God’s command). Let’s remove our presuppositions for a second and not presume every glowing thing about Mary written by the Church Fathers meant that they taught doctrines about the “New Eve.”.
